BMW M1 Books and Sources

The magazines, homologation forms, BMW releases, registers and results databases behind every page of this independent reference to the BMW M1, each listed with its address where it has one, and with a pill that grades it.

The earliest work cited here is the issue of auto motor und sport dated 24 April 1976, in which Karl Mauer set out the choice BMW Motorsport had made between a Formula 1 engine and a mid-engined coupé for the newly created World Championship for Makes: it took the coupé. This site is an independent reference to the BMW M1, 1978–1981, and the list below gives every source it cites, that issue among them, from the period magazines and the homologation forms to BMW's own releases, the registers and the results databases, each with its address where it has one.source 1

How the sources are graded

Each source's pill grades the work as a kind of source, from Primary to Unchecked. Primary means made at the time, or by the maker: the magazines of 1976 to 1986 that reported the car as it was built, tested and raced, among them Motor Sport, CAR, auto motor und sport and its auto katalog; the M1's homologation forms, kept in the FIA's historic database; and BMW's own releases, from the thirtieth-anniversary release of 2008 to the Piquet tribute of 2025, and BMW Group Classic's pages. BMW's releases count as primary for what BMW said, and where one disagrees with a form or a period report, the pages give both. The date of Group 4 recognition is one case: the form's 1 December 1980 against BMW's own later account, set out on the history page.

Reference means careful later work: Motor Sport's histories, drives and interviews from 1997 on, other later articles, the published excerpt from the book IMSA 1969–1989, and two registers. The BMW M1 Register's table of serials, compiled without stated sources, is used for counts and dates; the Hagerty Drivers Foundation's National Historic Vehicle Register documents the Andy Warhol M1. Database sources are results read one entry at a time: racingsportscars.com, Motor Sport's database, eWRC-results and touringcarracing.net. Unchecked covers Wikipedia, in English and German, an enthusiast site's account of a record car, and Motor Sport's buying guide of 2021, whose history keeps English Wikipedia's wording. A page cites one only beside a stronger source, or names it in the sentence.source 2source 3source 4source 5source 6source 7source 8source 9source 10source 11source 12source 13source 14source 15

Reading a citation

Elsewhere on the site, the numbers at the end of each section lead to the sources at the foot of the page, numbered in the order the page first uses them, so the same work may be No. 2 on one page and No. 9 on the next. Each entry gives, after the work, the place in it to look: a page, a table, a race or a form's page, such as p. 83 of Motor Sport for April 1981, Jeremy Walton's road impressions. On this page each source appears only once, its address given in plain text.source 16

The sources that carry most weight

SourceWhat it gives
BMW's thirtieth-anniversary release, 27 March 2008The maker's history of the car, with its specification of the road car and its technical description of the Group 4 and Group 5 cars
The homologation formsForm No. 670, Group 4, valid from 1 December 1980 and later transferred to Group B; form No. B-240, Group B, valid from 1 March 1983
The period testsJeremy Walton's road impressions in Motor Sport, April 1981; A.H.'s "M1 Magic", December 1984; the first German test, in auto motor und sport 25/1978, as BMW Group Classic quotes it
CAR, March 1979, and Motor Sport, 1979The making of the car, from Lamborghini to Baur, and Denis Jenkinson's columns on the Procar races of 1979
auto motor und sportThe decision of 1976, and the prices and makers' data of 1 August 1979 in the auto katalog 1980
The registersThe BMW M1 Register's serials, build dates, colours and first deliveries, used as counts; the National Historic Vehicle Register's file on the Warhol car
The results databasesThe M1's race entries from 1979 to 2003 (racingsportscars.com), the Procar rounds (Motor Sport), the rally car's starts (eWRC-results) and the German championship (touringcarracing.net)
Motor Sport, 1997–2023Roger Bell's drive of 1997, Richard Heseltine's history of 2008 and the interviews with Hans-Joachim Stuck, Gian Paolo Dallara and others

When two of them disagree, each reading appears with its source. The clearest case is the number built: the totals in print differ, and the production page sets them out against the Register's ledger.source 5source 4source 17source 16source 18source 19source 2source 20source 1source 3source 9source 10source 11source 21source 22source 23source 24source 25

Printed works

Two printed works besides the magazines are cited. The auto katalog 1980, auto motor und sport's annual catalogue, dated 1979, gives BMW's price list and data and those of the M1's rivals. IMSA 1969–1989, from Octane Press, is cited through the chapter on BMW that the International Motor Racing Research Center published, on BMW of North America's racing, the March M1/C and Red Lobster Racing's GTO championship of 1981 in an M1.source 3source 8
